It is said that the cave had been occupied long before the arrival of Buddhism to Sri Lanka, with the oldest serious dating back around 700BC.

Located twelve (12) miles away form the site of Sigiriya, another Buddhist world heritage site.

The Cave of the Great Kings is the largest of the caves in the Golden Temple of Dambulla, containing forty statues representing the Lord of Buddha sitting, and another sixteen of the Lord Buddha standing.

Did you know? That the Golden Temple of Dambulla contains of more that a 150 statues of Lord Buddha, Kings and related deities and thousands of paintings of Buddha.

A sacred pilgrimage site for 22 centuries, this cave monastery, with its five sanctuaries, is the largest, best-preserved cave-temple complex in Sri Lanka. The Buddhist mural paintings (covering an area of 2,100 m2) are of particular importance, as are the 157 statues.

UNESCO listed the Golden Temple of Dambulla as world heritage site.

  1. The gateway arch is really an impressiv building. Especially the elevators are awesome. I really recommend everybody to check it out.

    Beautiful and Gold. Must see place irrespective of anyone's Religion back ground. Coz I think this is a part of world history.
