2851319753_4b65324995_bKill Devil Hills is a small town, with a population of only about 6,000 people, but is considered one of the oldest settlements on the Outer Banks and the site of few of North Carolina’s most interesting history.

The name Kill Devil Hills is fabled to have come by way of pirates who once called these shores home. Legend has it that pirates spent many nights creating moonshine in the area filled with sand dune hills that was, as they said, “strong enough to kill the devil”.

Before leaving the place, be sure to stop by the state capital building and the North Carolina Museum of Art, both centrally located in downtown. In Charlotte, check out the downtown historic district and the Mint Museum of Art. The Discovery Place Museum of Science is also located in Charlotte and is a great place for families with children.

Did you know? That Kill Devil Hills is famous in part as the site of the Wright Brothers National Memorial, located here because it is the place where Orville Wright first took a flight in a machine powered airplane that was heavier than air. The historic flight, which happened on Thursday, December 17 1903.
