Great Harbour Cay of Bahamas
Great Harbour Cay is a home for most of the residents of the Berry Islands, who live in the main settlement of bullocks harbour and is about 10mi/16.1km long and only 1.5/2.4km wide.
The Great Harbour Cay is actually pronounced as “Great Harbour KEY” about 130 nautical miles from Miami. It had its heyday in the 1960’s, after being developed as a luxury resort and attracting such visitors and vacationers as Cary Grant, Douglas Fairbanks Jr. and many more. After ten years, the development stopped and over the years, few of the resorts have opulent facilities deteriorated. However, the main infrastructures like roads, electrical power, airport runway, telephone services, marina and few more are all in good condition and maintained very well so there’s nothing worry about it.
A secure hurricane hole, near the centre of the island and accessed from the west, offers excellent protection for boats, as well as a marina and fuel dock. Caves near the northern end of the island and a south-to-north drive by the island’s highest point are worthwhile.
The Island features the largest Berry Island in the Bahamas. There are shops available “The Village” where you can find most of the shops for souvenirs, foods and this is the area where most of the locals live.
The Island is considered as one of the top tourist destinations of the Bahamas and it is really great for swimming, diving and sunning on the numerous beaches.
Did you know? That the Great Harbour Cay is located very close to the “tongue of the Ocean” which happens to be a home for big fishes. And only about 500 people living in the island.
